In 1907 Hagenbeck founded his own zoo at Stellingen, near Hamburg. Prior to building these moated enclosures Hagenbeck investigated the jumping abilities of the animals. As well as running his own zoo, he also supplied many wellknown zoos with animals. Hagenbeck’s zoo was destroyed by bombing in 1943, but was rebuilt after the end of the Second World War.
