Early life Bannon was born Ann Weldy in Joliet, Indiana, on 15 September 1932. Bannon was raised in nearby Hinsdale, Illinois. She was educated at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and witnessed lesbian relationships between sorority girls.

Christopher Routledge Brackett, Leigh (1915–78) Predominantly a science fiction and fantasy writer, Leigh Douglass Brackett’s comparatively smaller output of hard-boiled detective and crime novels, short stories and screenplays have nevertheless been significant. Born in Los Angeles, California, Brackett married science fiction writer Edmond Hamilton in 1946 and moved to Kinsman, Ohio. Brackett died in 1978 from cancer in Lancaster, California, while working on the screenplay for The Empire Strikes Back (1981).

Bunker was sentenced to 90 days in county jail for parole violations which he would later claim were trumped up by the police, who suspected him of being the serial killer the ‘Hollywood Prowler’. He escaped from the minimum security facility and would spend the next few years travelling across the US as a fugitive on the FBI’s most wanted list. Bunker was captured in Los Angeles and resorted to feigning insanity, which led to him being adjudged criminally insane and committed to Atascadero State Hospital.
